Frequently Asked Questions About Renting a 4×4 Car in Uganda
Renting a 4×4 is the best way to explore Uganda’s national parks, crater lakes, and highland roads — but it comes with real questions: what it costs, what documents you need, whether you should self-drive or hire a driver-guide, and what to do if something goes wrong on a remote road. Below, we’ve answered the questions our clients ask us most, organized by topic so you can jump straight to what you need.
Costs and Pricing
How much does it cost to rent a 4×4 in Uganda? Rates depend on the vehicle type, rental duration, and whether you want a driver-guide included. A compact 4×4 like a RAV4 costs less per day than a full safari-spec Land Cruiser or Land Cruiser V8. See our car rental rates for current pricing, or contact us with your dates and route for an exact quote.
Is fuel included in the rental price? No, our rates exclude fuel. We’ll advise you on realistic fuel budgets for your specific route, especially for remote circuits like Kidepo Valley where fuel stations are sparse.
How much does a driver-guide cost? Our driver-guide service starts from as low as US$15 per day, in addition to the vehicle rental rate. See our car rental with driver page for details.
Do you offer discounts for long-term rentals? Yes. Rentals of a week or longer typically bring the daily rate down. Visit our long term car rental page or ask us directly for a custom quote.
Is a security deposit required? Yes, a refundable security deposit is required at pickup, typically held on a credit card or in cash. We’ll confirm the exact amount for your chosen vehicle when you book.
Documents and Eligibility
Who can drive a rental 4×4 car in Uganda? Any driver must present a valid driver’s license at pickup. If more than one person will be driving, all drivers must provide their license and ID in advance. We require drivers to be between 23 and 70 years old, with a license held for at least two years.
What documents do I need to rent a 4×4? A valid driver’s license, a national ID or passport, and a credit card or cash for the security deposit. Foreign nationals should also carry an International Driving Permit.
Do I need an International Driving Permit? Yes, if you’re a foreign national. We recommend arranging this before you travel, as it can’t be obtained locally in Uganda.
Can I choose between automatic and manual transmission? Yes, we offer both. Let us know your preference when you book so we can match you with the right vehicle.
Self-Driving vs. Driver-Guided
Should I self-drive or hire a driver-guide in Uganda? It depends on your comfort level and route. Self-driving gives you full control and flexibility, and works well on established routes like Lake Mburo or Queen Elizabeth. A driver-guide is a better fit for first-time visitors, remote routes like Kidepo, or anyone who’d rather focus on the scenery than the road.
Is it safe to self-drive in Uganda? Yes, with the right vehicle and preparation. Main routes and park roads are manageable for confident drivers, though conditions can deteriorate quickly in the rainy season. We brief every self-drive client on their specific route before departure.
What side of the road does Uganda drive on? Uganda drives on the left, with right-hand-drive vehicles, similar to the UK, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Do I need a 4×4 for every route, or just for national parks? Kampala and major towns are accessible in a standard car, but any route into a national park, or travel during the rainy seasons (March–May, September–November), requires a genuine 4×4 with proper ground clearance.
Vehicles and Suitability
What is the best 4×4 for a Uganda safari? For most safari routes, a Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Cruiser Prado offers the best balance of comfort, reliability, and off-road capability. For remote parks like Kidepo Valley, or rainy-season travel to Bwindi, a full safari-spec Land Cruiser is strongly recommended. See our 4×4 vehicles page for the full range.
Can I rent a car with a rooftop tent for camping safaris? Yes, we offer both a rooftop tent Land Cruiser and a pop-up roof Land Cruiser, along with camping gear rental — see our rent car + camping gear service.
Do you offer vehicles for large groups or families? Yes, our Safari Van and larger Land Cruisers suit groups and families well. See our family car hire page for recommendations.
Can I get a child seat with my rental? Yes, child seats are available on request — let us know when booking so we can have one ready for pickup.
Routes, Parks, and Restrictions
Are there restrictions on where I can drive the rental vehicle? Some vehicles aren’t suited to Uganda’s most remote parks, particularly Kidepo Valley, due to road conditions. We’ll confirm which vehicles are approved for your intended route before you book.
Can I drive the rental car to Rwanda, Kenya, or Tanzania? Yes, we offer cross-border car rental and East Africa car rental for clients wanting to extend their trip regionally. Additional permits and fees apply — ask us for details.
Can I return the vehicle to a different location? Yes, we offer one-way rentals, picking up in one city and dropping off in another, sometimes with an additional fee depending on distance.
Which parks need a 4×4, and which are accessible year-round? Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Kidepo Valley, and Lake Mburo all require a proper 4×4. Lake Mburo is the most accessible year-round; Kidepo and Bwindi are the most demanding, especially in the rainy season.
Safety, Insurance, and Breakdowns
Is insurance included in the rental price? Yes, basic insurance is included on all our rentals, covering third-party liability and collision. We’ll confirm your excess (deductible) amount and what’s covered before you drive off — full details are in our Terms & Conditions.
What should I check before driving off? Inspect the vehicle for existing damage and take photos or video with our agent present. Confirm the spare tyre, jack, and wheel spanner are in the vehicle, and make sure you understand how to engage four-wheel drive before you leave.
What happens if I break down or have an accident? We provide 24/7 roadside assistance for the full duration of your rental. Save our emergency contact number before you set off, and call us immediately in the event of a breakdown or accident, wherever you are in the country.
What if I get a flat tyre on a remote park road? Every vehicle leaves with a full-size spare, jack, and tools. If you’re not comfortable changing it yourself, call our 24/7 support line and we’ll guide you or dispatch help.
Logistics and Pickup
How far in advance should I book a 4×4 rental? You can book months ahead or, if availability allows, just hours before pickup. We recommend booking early during peak travel seasons (June–September and December–February) to secure your preferred vehicle.
Can I arrange pickup or delivery at the airport or my hotel? Yes, we offer vehicle delivery and pickup at Entebbe Airport, Kampala hotels, and other convenient locations. See our Entebbe Airport pick-ups page for details.
Can I book a car together with a gorilla trekking permit? Yes — see our car rental with gorilla permit service to arrange both in one booking.
